First Time Whitewater Rafting Tips from River Guides

For many visitors to the New River Gorge, whitewater rafting is the highlight of their trip. The first time heading downriver can feel both exciting and a little intimidating, but experienced river guides know that beginners quickly discover just how fun rafting can be.

With the right preparation and a few helpful tips from professional guides, your first rafting adventure will be both safe and unforgettable.

Listen to Your Guide

One of the most important tips for first-time rafters is to listen closely to your guide. River guides are trained professionals who know every rapid, rock, and bend in the river.

Before the trip begins, your guide will explain important paddling commands and safety instructions. These typically include directions such as:

Forward paddle
Back paddle
Stop paddling
Get down in the raft

These commands help keep the raft moving safely through the rapids.

Work as a Team

Whitewater rafting is a team sport. Each person in the raft contributes to steering and maneuvering through rapids.

When everyone paddles together, the raft moves more efficiently and responds better to the guide’s instructions. This teamwork also creates one of the most enjoyable parts of rafting—sharing the adventure with others.

Stay Relaxed

It’s natural to feel nervous before your first rapid, but staying relaxed actually helps you enjoy the experience more.

Professional guides carefully choose lines through each rapid and know how to navigate the river safely. Trust the process and focus on enjoying the ride.

Many first-time rafters say their nerves disappear after the first big splash of water.

Dress Appropriately

Proper clothing makes a big difference during a rafting trip.

Wear quick-drying clothing such as:

Athletic shirts
Swimsuits
Synthetic shorts

Water shoes or strapped sandals are also recommended. Avoid cotton clothing because it stays wet and can make you feel cold.

Hold On and Have Fun

While navigating rapids, always hold the paddle correctly and keep one hand firmly gripping the T-handle at the top of the paddle.

This prevents accidental bumps with fellow rafters and keeps everyone safe.

Most importantly, remember to look around and enjoy the scenery. The towering canyon walls and forested slopes of the New River Gorge create one of the most beautiful rafting landscapes in the eastern United States.

Trips with West Virginia Adventures are designed to give first-time rafters a safe introduction to whitewater while still delivering plenty of excitement.
