The Upper Gauley River in West Virginia is known far and wide as a whitewater rafting destination for adrenaline-seekers around the world, it is home to the famous Big Five Class V rapids (Initiation, Pillow Rock, Iron Ring, Lost Paddle and Sweet’s Falls) that have made a name for themselves around the world as the ultimate commercial rafting challenge.

Fall Release Dates
September: 11-14, 18- 21, 25-28
October: 2-5, 9-12, 17-18

Scheduled dam releases start in September the weekend after Labor Day and continue through the 3rd weekend in October. October 16, 2010 is Bridge Day

Plenty of Options
Come to West Virginia for a long weekend of whitewater rafting and run the Upper and Lower sections in two consecutive days, take on your favorite section two days in a row, or do the entire 26 miles in a challenging Ironman day of rafting.

Gauley River
National Recreation Area
The Gauley River National Recreation Area is home to the awesome Gauley River. This protected area was established in 1988 and protects a 26 mile portion of the Gauley River and a 6 mile segment of the Meadow River in southern West Virginia.

At the upstream end of the park is Summersville Dam, the only area of the park publicly accessible by vehicle. The Gauley River punctuates the serene beauty of the gorge with world-famous whitewater rapids.
